So, raising more awareness and having more access to information about women’s emotional health is our goal for Women’s Health Week (6 – 12 September)!
Regardless of the fact women encounter several types of emotional health issues, one of the most often observed yet overlooked problems is stress!
In layman’s terms, stress is the feeling you get when faced with a situation, obstacle, or trauma!
Obviously, it would be next to impossible to find a person today who is unaware of the word stress or the ill effects it has on our health, happiness, energy level and peace of mind!
So you are stressed, what’s the point?
The point is when we feel stress our emotional health is forgotten about! Our thoughts, behaviours and body react in ways that you are unable to control! The body reacts to stress by releasing stress hormones i.e. cortisol, glucagon, prolactin and others. These hormones increase your blood pressure, heart rate and blood sugar levels!
Chronic stress can lead to a plethora of health conditions such as depression and anxiety, gastrointestinal issues, unintentional weight gain or loss, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, strokes, menstrual problems, frequent colds and flu infections, skin disorders, autoimmune diseases and other health conditions!
It is believed that women deal with stress in different ways than men! Women are highly likely to "protect and support" their close loved ones, whilst also drawing on support from family and friends!

With the belief that stress is acceptable and expected, we set ourselves up for making it apart of who we are every day! When stress does occur, it is crucial to take a time out! Sometimes that time out is a way of preventing further undue stress! Being wise is key, even if it is for a five minutes!
Let’s be realistic, we all have to deal with stress, but there are steps you can take to help yourself handle stress in a healthy way to prevent it from making you sick!
